Cookie policy

This site uses two items of storage, both first-party, both set by the site's own script, and neither used to identify or profile you. Everything about them is listed below, including how to clear them.

Cookies · two keys, both first-party

1. What is stored

Two values are stored, each written both to local storage and to a first-party cookie so that the choice survives whichever mechanism your browser restricts. One records that you dismissed the entry notice, so it is not shown on every page. The other records your storage choice, so the banner is not shown again after you have decided.

Every storage key used by this site
KeyTypeWhat it holdsLifetimePurpose
craft_of_reporting_notice_acceptedLocal storage and first-party cookieThe single value yesUp to twelve monthsStops the entry notice reappearing on every page
craft_of_reporting_consent_v2Local storage and first-party cookieThe single value granted or deniedUp to twelve monthsRecords your analytics-storage choice and hides the banner

Neither value contains a name, an email address, an identifier, an address, a device fingerprint or anything derived from your browsing. Neither is readable by any other website. Both are set with the SameSite attribute set to Lax and a path covering this site only.

2. What is not stored

There are no advertising cookies, no analytics cookies, no tag manager, no pixel, no session recorder, no A/B testing tool, no third-party font or icon service, no embedded video or map, and no social plugin. The site makes no request to any other domain at all, so no third party is in a position to set anything while you read.

3. Consent Mode v2 signals

Consent Mode v2 default signals are declared inline in the head of every page before anything else runs. Advertising storage, advertising user data and advertising personalisation are denied. Analytics storage is denied. Functionality storage and security storage are granted, with an update wait of five hundred milliseconds.

Choosing to allow analytics storage updates that one signal to granted. The three advertising signals stay denied for ever and no action on this site changes them. Because no measurement tag is installed, allowing analytics storage currently permits nothing to be collected; the signals exist so that the site is correct by construction, and installing any tag would require the privacy notice to be updated first.

4. Changing or clearing your choice

Use the button below to clear the stored choice. The storage banner reopens immediately, and nothing is remembered until you choose again. The storage choices button in the footer of every page reopens the banner without clearing anything, if you simply want to switch option.

You can also clear both keys through your browser. In most browsers the relevant controls are under privacy or site settings, where site data for this domain can be deleted. Deleting the keys has no effect on what you can read: the site works identically, and the only difference is that the entry notice and the storage banner appear again.

5. Local storage compared with cookies

Both values are written twice, once to local storage and once to a first-party cookie. That is not duplication for its own sake. Some browsers clear local storage between sessions while keeping cookies, others restrict cookies while allowing local storage, and several privacy configurations do one or the other unpredictably. Writing both means the entry notice does not reappear for a reader whose browser has quietly discarded one mechanism.

The difference matters for how you clear them. Local storage is removed when you clear site data for this domain; the cookies expire on their own after twelve months or when you clear cookies. The reset button on this page removes both at once, which is the simplest route. Neither value is ever sent to a server for analysis: the cookie accompanies requests to this domain because that is how cookies work, and nothing on the site reads it server-side.

6. The legal basis for each key

The entry-notice key exists to deliver a function you asked for by dismissing the notice: not being shown it again on every page. Storage of that kind is treated as strictly necessary for the service you requested and does not depend on consent. The storage-choice key records the decision you made in the banner, which is itself the expression of consent, and keeping a record of that decision is what allows the site to stop asking.

Neither key is used for analytics, advertising, measurement, personalisation or profiling, and neither is shared with anybody. The privacy notice sets out the controller, the retention periods and your rights in full, and names the Data Protection Commission as the supervisory authority for Ireland.

7. Services this site does not use

For completeness, because their absence is unusual enough to be worth stating: there is no tag manager, no analytics platform, no advertising network, no consent-management platform from a vendor, no content delivery network for fonts or scripts, no map, no video or audio host, no social sharing widget, no comment platform, no chat tool, no heatmap or session recorder, and no error-reporting service. Adding any of them would require this page and the privacy notice to be rewritten first.

8. If you block storage entirely

The site is built to work with storage blocked. Every chapter, table, checklist and the story-structure meter function normally, because none of them depends on stored state. The only consequence is that the entry notice and the storage banner cannot remember your choice and will appear on each visit, which is inconvenient rather than limiting.

9. Why the notice exists at all

The entry notice states what this site is before you rely on it: a free, independent set of teaching notes that awards no qualification, credit or accreditation, that is not legal advice, and that cannot tell you whether your own work is publishable. That is information a reader should have at the start rather than discover at the end, which is why it is shown once and then remembered.

Storage in six lines

  • Two first-party keys, both set by this site's own script.
  • Neither holds an identifier, a name, an address or anything derived from browsing.
  • Both expire within twelve months and can be cleared at any time.
  • No advertising or analytics tag is installed anywhere on the site.
  • All Consent Mode advertising signals are denied permanently.
  • Everything on the site works with storage blocked.
